Thinking about "the boys i mean"

I wonder, said Slothrop to himself, how this poem would change if instead of the refrain being "the boys i mean" cummings wrote, merely, "boys"? And how do we make sense of the poem being concerned about being "refined" while using monosyllabic, crass and vulgar language? What's the effect of that ironic double standard?
