On Friday we were asked to reflect on what disturbed us most about Blue Velvet. I knew as soon as the movie ended what disturbed me most, in fact i knew a third of the way what was absolutely ludicrous. The portrayal of Dorothy's life destiny being totally controlled by men. Frank had the power to destroy it, and Jeffery was given the power to fix it. I understand that that's just how the scrip was written and Lynch probably meant nothing by it, but its just so irritating how this situation is romanticized constantly in the media and film world. I would rather watch Frank brutally rape Dorothy (which he kinda didn't it never looked to me like she fought back or didn't enjoy it) than have to be submit to 90minutes of how Jeffery's penis solved all of Dorothy's problems. Anyway, once again i know these weren't Lynch's intentions, but i figured if we are going to continue to painstakingly analyze this film forever we might as well observe this aspect as well.
